Independent living for the Elderly may get a boost by the end of the year.
Kalamazoo MI – Independent living is often a value for Senior Citizens. When health is declining there are often more and more limitations on the elderly person, so maintaining an independent living environment becomes a real value. As you can see by this article below that we found in a Bellingham WA newspaper, there may be some new technology on the horizon that can make it even more possible for a senior citizen to stay in his or her own home. Unfortunately, this may be a while in coming….and decisions often need to be made more quickly!
It is often a difficult decision when comparing the needs of the elderly with the elderly services available. Staying in his or her own home might be the most desired option for your elderly parents. But as you feel the responsiblity of caring for your parents, then you need to consider the implications of caring for your elderly parents at home. Often times, the home that your aging parents have lived in has barriers to safe living for the elderly. There may be steps which pose a hazard, or a bathroom that is not handicapped accessible. In some cases, it makes the most sense to simply put a dead bolt lock on the basement door so there is no chance of going down to “find that family picture that suddenly becomes so important”. For others, it might also make sense to move a stackable washer and dryer into a spare bedroom and replace the bathtub with an handicapped accessible shower. If this can be done in a cost-effective manner, and it seems like your aging parents will be able to stay in the home for several more years because of your renovations and the care that you will provide your elderly parents at home, it may be the best option. The Veenstra Team is willing to come to help you explore your options. We can help you determine what the value of the house may be in current market conditions, so that you can decide whether it is worth making the renovations, or whether it makes more sense to purchase a condo either in a senior condominium association or anywhere in the community where renovations may not be needed.
Friendship Village in Kalamazoo also has some great options for independent living. Their Garden Homes at Friendship Village are spacious, beautifully appointed homes which combine privacy with all the advantages of the area’s original life–care retirement community. The Garden Homes are the first and only option of its kind in Kalamazoo.
The Garden Homes have generous square footage on the main level—plus a lower level that can be used for additional living space, guest accommodations or extra storage. A two–car attached garage will also be included in each Garden Home.
Inside, quality finishings such as granite countertops, maple cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, nine–foot ceilings throughout the main level, coffer ceilings in the entry and living room as a custom design element, ceramic tile foyer, and no–step entrances are standard. These attractive residences are situated on the beautiful Friendship Village campus, in a quiet residential area and are designed to take advantage of pleasant views, with a slightly rolling landscape that will add interest and charm.
The Garden Homes allow a senior citizen to be a part of the contiuum of care at Friendship Village, so you can be assured that future needs will also be met!
There is also the option of Woodside at Friendship Village in Kalamazoo, which provides assisted living options. The resident-centered services program is custom designed to fit the wants, needs and preferred schedules of each individual resident. We have been told that the staff there approach every day as if they are working in the resident’s home.

GE, Intel to offer telemedicine for senior citizens
By BOBBY CALVAN / McClatchy Newspapers
According to this press release in the Bellingham WA newspaper, SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Intel Corp. and General Electric on Monday announced the formation of a Sacramento-based joint venture focused on telemedicine and independent living. The new company could be operational by the end of the year, the companies announced.
The new company will build on the alliance announced in April 2009 between Intel and GE to promote independent living and managing chronic disease.
The new venture will develop and market products, services and technology that promote independent living, particularly among seniors, whether at home or in assisted-living communities. The technology would link the home to a medical provider.
In a joint statement by GE and Intel, officials said that “the dramatic increase of people living with chronic conditions, and a global aging population” emphasizes “the need to find new models of health care delivery and extend care to the home and other residential settings.”
Intel has a major campus in Folsom, Calif. The Sacramento area was selected as the headquarters for the new company, which will be equally owned by Intel and GE, because a key Intel executive overseeing the venture lives in the region.”
