Oshtemo Barns Day
October 22 – 11am to 3pm
Kalamazoo Real Estate and Barns – On Saturday, October 22nd from 11:00am to 3:00pm the Oshtemo Historical Society will be celebrating Oshtemo Barns Day to highlight historic barns in
Oshtemo Township. The event will be held at the Drake House, 927 N. Drake Road, just a quarter mile north of West Main Street (M-43).
An important part of the event will be the gathering of oral histories of
The ubiquitous barns and farms of once mostly rural Oshtemo Township are quickly disappearing , as the open land becomes urbanized. Driving around the township one sees barns standing in various states of repair…or disrepair, barns of different styles, alone and forgotten non-working barns and barns still in active use, sometimes on the fringes of new subdivisions. These barns and their stories are testimony to the rich agricultural history of the township. Their stories need to be preserved and documented. One of the Society’s missions is to gather stories and pictures of farm life and past generations.
Also, Thursday, October 20, Steve Stier of the Michigan Barn Preservation Network will speak on barn styles of the upper Midwest and his work with the Network. Please join us at the Oshtemo Township Hall, 7275 West Main Street at 7:00pm for this free program.
